Instructions for vessel wastes
When calling at the Port of Loviisa, vessels are to adhere to the instructions below. Up to date instructions are published on the home page Port of Loviisa.
General instructions for vessel wastes
- The vessel has to submit a Notification of ship-generated waste and cargo wastes to the port authority 24 hours prior to arrival or if the vessel has an exemption via Portnet system by ships agent.
- Solid ship-generated waste, non hazardous, is collected on a self service basis and is open 24/7.
- Liquid and hazardouz waste reguires ordering of reception services.
- The ships agent orders the reception services according to the instructions below.
- The master of the vessel is liable that the waste to be discharged is sorted in accordance with the instructions of the port.
- Waste can only be left in the available waste collection points 1 – 3.
- Main collection point is 1. If the collection point 2 or 3 is full, pls go to main collection point.
- Waste have to be sorted in a way that corresponds with the categorization of the collection units.
- The number of the collection point is informed below in sorting information.
- Hazardious solid waste must only be left to hazardious container in waste collection point 1.
Container is closed and will be opened by request:
Monday – Thursday 07.00 – 15.00 and Friday 07.00 – 13.00.
Other times on duty call with additional fee.
- If the waste lot is more substantial or if the consistency of the waste does not correspond with the categorization of the collection units, then the vessel has to report this to its agent, who reports to the port maintenance.
- The vessel is obligated to report all defects and deficiencies of the collection units to the agent of the vessel.
- If the instructions are not adhered to, then the vessel is liable to compensate the port for all costs accrued for all extra work and waste management.
Solid waste
Solid waste means a household waste and other similar waste generated during the regular ship operation.
Sorted waste, non-hazardous
The ship will discharge the waste to the waste collection point on a self service basis. Open 24/7. Dimensions (length, width, height) of a waste package may not exceed 1.2 m.
Sorting instructions:
Metal packaging (1): Tins, aluminium tins and foil, metal lids, crown and screw caps, soft drink tins. No paint tins, aerosols, batteries or other hazardous waste, cables or tubes!
Glass packaging (1): Only glass packaging: glass bottles and jars, clear and colored. No crystal, porcelain, ceramics, window or mirror glass, light bulbs, bottle caps or jarlids.
Carton (1 – 3): Clean, dry carton and cardboard: packaging, paper bags, toilet and kitchen roll tubes, milk and juice cartons.
No paper, wet or dirty cardboard, foliated packs, expanded polystyrene or plastic.
Plastic packaging (1): Must be empty and dry. Foodstuff and detergent packaging, plastic bottles, plastic bags.
No dirty plastic packaging.
Other than above mentioned non-hazardious waste is Mixed waste (1 – 3): The ship will discharge the waste to the waste collection point on a self service basis. Open 24/7. Dimensions (length, width, height) of a waste package may not exceed 1.2 m.
Biowaste or international catering waste (1)
Biowaste, which is not originated outside EU, will be discharged to the waste collection point on a self service basis. Open 24/7. Food waste, fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds and tea bags, tissue paper.
International catering waste. All ships calling outside of EU during the voyage and wanting to deliver international catering waste to the port of Loviisa must make a service request via agent to the maintenance department to open the hazardious waste container, open mo – thu 07.00 – 15.00, fri 07.00 – 13.00. Other times on duty with additional fee.
The EC regulation 1774/2002 classifies any catering waste from means of transport operating on their route in countries outside the EU as a hazardous waste (class 1), due to the risk of disease and requires special handling. Such waste must be sorted separately onboard. If this catering waste is mixed with other waste, all waste must be handled as class 1 international catering waste according to the regulation.

- any waste, such as wrapping waste and packaging material which has been in contact with food and food waste.
Dimensions (length, width, height) of a waste package may not exceed 1.2 m.
Hazardous waste (1)
All ships wanting to deliver hazardous waste to the port of Loviisa must make a service request via agent to the maintenance department to open the hazardious waste container, open mo – thu 07.00 – 15.00, fri 07.00 – 13.00. Other times on duty with additional fee.
The waste must be sorted as follows:
- Batteries
- Fluorescent tube lamps
- Solid paint waste
- Solid oily waste
- (non-EU area food waste, described above)
Dimensions (length, width, height) of a waste package may not exceed 1.2 m.
Scrap metal (additional fee)
Scrap metal includes metal pipes and cables, wire ropes, taps, fittings, pullers, nails, metal container, furniture hardware, machinery and equipment made of metal.
To deliver scrap metal waste to the port of Loviisa, the ship must give a notification of the type and quantity of scrap metal waste no later than 24 hours before the arrival or on the previous workday by 3 pm.
Agent must contact the person in charge. The Port of Loviisa passes the ships order to Cronimet Finland ltd or to the waste management company, depending on quality and quantity of the waste and bills the vessel according to actual costs incurred.
Electrical and electronic waste (additional fee)
Electrical and electronic waste includes discarded information and communication equipment, household appliances, consumer electronics, lighting fixtures, electrical and electronic tools, monitoring and control equipment, vending and slot machines.
Agent must contact the person in charge if the ship wants to deliver electrical and electronic waste to the Port of Loviisa. The ship must give a notification of the type and quantity of electrical and electronic waste no later than 24 hours before arrival or on the previous workday by 3 pm.
The Port of Loviisa passes the ships order to the waste management company and bills the vessel according to actual costs incurred.
Solid cargo residues (additional fee)
Agent must contact the person in charge if the ship wants to deliver solid cargo residues. The ship must give a notification of the type and quantity of waste no later than 24 hours before arrival (notification exceptions for Sundays, Mondays and Public Holidays are presented in the beginning of these Instructions). The Port of Loviisa passes the ships order to the waste management company and bills the vessel according to actual costs incurred.
Exhaust gas-cleaning system residues (additional fee)
Agent must contact the person in charge if the ship wants to deliver exhaust gas-cleaning residues to the port of Loviisa. The ship must give a notification of the type and quantity of waste no later than 24 hours before arrival (notification exceptions for Sundays, Mondays and Public Holidays are presented in the beginning of these Instructions). The Port of Loviisa passes the ships order to the waste management company and bills the vessel according to actual costs incurred.
Liquid waste
Liquid wastes generated in the engine room (15 m3 is included in the waste management fee)
Oy Phoenix Collector Ltd takes care of the collection and management of oily water and liquid oily waste at the Port of Loviisa. When vessels discharge liquid oily waste, they have to adhere to the following limitations:
- The order for waste reception is to be made by ship’s agent directly to the service provider.

- The waste is received at 7 a.m. to 16 p.m. on workdays.
- Advance ordering of reception services must be made 24 hours before or on the previous workday by 3 pm before the pumping is commenced and the time is specified at the latest at 14 p.m. the day before.
- The vessel has to discharge the waste to the collection unit by pumping and in liquid form.
- Transportation includes 2 hrs of unbilled pumping and after that pumping from vessel €45/30 min.
- The vessel has to have a minimum pumping efficiency of 3 m³/hours.
- The pumping must not last more than 4 hours.
- The vessel has to separate bilge water before discharging it to the collection units.
- The minimum volume per discharge is 2 m³ (excluding waste oil, for which the minimum single discharge is 1 m³).
- The vessel specific maximum single discharge is 15 m³ (total volume of separated waste and bilge water).
Sewage from vessel, black/grey water (15 m3 is included in the waste management fee)
Eerola Yhtiöt Oy or Loviisan Viemäripalvelu ltd takes care of the collection and management of sewage at the Port of Loviisa. When vessels discharge sewage, they have to adhere to the following limitations:
- The order for waste reception is to be made by ship’s agent directly to the service provider.
- Orders Tel. +358 (0)50 313 0729 / Eerola Yhtiöt Oy or +358(0)400 604 076 / Loviisan Viemäripalvelu.
- Reception weekdays 8 am – 4 pm.
- The advance order for waste reception services must be made by ship’s agent 24 hours before or on the previous workday by 3 pm before pumping is commenced.
- The maximum one-time waste delivery volume is 15 m³.
- Emptying tank from sewage includes 1 hour working time. An extra charge, according to price list of the service provider, will be collected for working time exceeding 1 hour.
- The agent must specify the ships camlock to the service provider.
Liquid cargo residues or washing waters, non hazardous (additional fee)
